Ian was taught to play the pipes by his
dad Bob Small. By the age of 10 he was a playing member of the
City Of Hull Pipe Band. A few years later he was a founder
member of the C.R.S. Pipe Band under the watchful eye of Pipe
Major David Morrison.
At the age of 21 he became a sgt instructor in the
Humberside A.C.F Band and was soon handed the roll of Pipe
Major. The band played at some spectacular places including the
Chelsea Pensioners, the Marines Music School in Deal and the
Channel Tunnel to name just a few.
In 1991 he decided to form a competition band and with the
help of a few fellow pipers and drummers the Kingstown
Scottish Pipe Band was up and running. Ian was the original
Pipe Major and still holds the position today.
